Amelia Earhart Study

Recently we have been learning about Community Helpers in Social Studies. As a spin-off of pilots, we are learning about the couragous, first female pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart. Students now know that Amelia's later trip across around the World turned into a mystery, still unsolved. If students wish to read more about her, here are some kid's links.

We're Thankful

Today is Thanksgiving in America. Thanksgiving is also celebrated in Canada, but during October instead. Thanksgiving is similar to the Korean holiday, Chuseok. The bountiful harvest is celebrated by sharing a meal with loved ones. Mostly the meal consists of turkey, stuffing (breading put into the turkey), beans and vegetables, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin or apple pie! MMMM Before the meal, usually people go around the table and explain what they are thankful for ... here is what each of our students said they are thankful for...

Jihan-I am thankful for having many friends this year.

Roghad-I am thankful for Ms. Meyer as a teacher and I like learning.

Rufat-I am thankful that it's Thanksgiving because people hunt turkeys and eat them.

Monica J-I am thankful for my apartment because that is my shelter.

Monica G-I am thankful for my mom and dad because without them I couldn't hug anybody.

Sena- I am thankful for my brother because he plays with me and when he is bored then he asks me to play so nicely.

Abdullah-I am thankful because I am to RIS.

Anas-I am thankful because my brother came to Korea from Saudi Arabia.

William-I am thankful for mom and dad because they are loving me.

Hana-I am thankful for the teachers who are teaching us well so we can understand and know lots of English and things.

Lora-I am thankful for my frisky cat, Murphy, because he is so sweet and always running in the hallways and living room *smiles and laughs.*

Sofia-I am thankful for my cousin's cat and dog and my cousins because the cat is cute.

Waleed-I am thankful for my friends.

Taki-I am thankful that we have a body because if we don't have a body then we cannot move.

Ms. Meyer-I am thankful for the people in my life that shape me as a person each and every day. These people include my 15 little children who I see each day, and whom I love and adore for each of their qualities, questions and ambitions. Each day I am proud of them for so many reasons; academics, socializing and their bright personalities. I am lucky to have the students that I have. I am thankful for my family that is back home in Canada, my nephews and nieces who make me smile and laugh as we speak on skype and I watch them grow, as well as the rest of my family who continually support all of the decisions I make. I am thankful for the 'family' I have in Korea, who keep me company, share special moments with me and most importantly make me laugh and smile. I am lucky.

FABLES

Most of us know the famous fable about the FAST hare and the SLOW tortoise. Well, the hare 'knew' he would win the race because he is SO fast! He thought it was SO fast that he took a nap half way through the race! The slow, and steady tortoise kept racing and the hare woke up just in time to see the slow tortoise WIN the race!
MORAL: SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE
In real life we can learn from this lesson! Don't try to do things too fast, you will do a better job if you are slow and take your time.

We were fortunate enough to have Pranu's mom and baby sister join us today to teach us all about DIVALI! We learned about DIYAS (Small lamps); The story of RAMA and SITA; RANGOLI (Welcome designs); and FIREWORKS! To find out more, you can read this website:

We started making our very own diyas and we will make our own rangoli this week too! The official date this year is Friday, November 5th.

Once again, we are so lucky to have such a diverse classroom, so that we can share our celebrations with each other and learn about the world around us, because we have our own little world in the palm of our hands every day.

This week students began learning about the homerow on the keyboard and began typing games. They ALL seem very motivated to learn to type without looking at the keyboard, as mom, dad and their teacher does.
You could encourage them to do some journaling or creative writing on the computer, in a word document, and then send it to me via email. Beginning this term I will start Journaling with specific topics for homework. Please take advantage of technology and encourage your children to word process or invite them to use eduational websites that will enhance their learning and motivate them.

Fall Festival!

HAPPY FALL!!
Last Friday, October 29th, students dressed up in costumes or fall colours; decorated pumpkins and had them judged (WE WON BEST TEAM WORK FOR OUR EFFORTS!). Everyone in our class chose different shapes to draw, while I cut for them!
Then we trick-or-treated for candy around the school in the afternoon and enjoyed the Casper Cartoon for a period.
We really had a good time!

Dear Parents,
THANK YOU for making the time to join myself and the other staff on Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with each of you and have taken many new ideas from you. Here are some changes I'd like to make for Term Two.

• Post Vocabulary on the Blog so that you can assist your child in your first language (if necessary) and also English to reiterate the meaning of the new vocabulary.
• Post education websites to the blog so that you can encourage your child to learn with a different medium (i.e. Using technology).
• Send home more Creative Writing as homework. This will encourage students to use their thesaurus to increase their vocabulary.
• As mentioned in the interview, it would be very benificial for your child to obtain a children's thesaurus to use at home and even to bring to school. My goal is to improve their writing as well as increase their vocabulary.
• Lastly, I did not mention this to many of you, but students are keeping a Grade Two Portfolio. Each month they choose 8 of their favourite pieces of work to keep inside their portfolio. This will go home in June.

If you have any other suggestions, I am always available to talk via email, phone or in person.
